When asked to share what some of his challenges and difficulties were prior to being partnered with Stanley in July of 2019, Josh said his life was entirely different. Some of his biggest difficulties were dealing with weight, depression, social anxiety and interpersonal relationships.
His experience going through the Victory For Vets Veteran Service Dog Program was very positive and relaxed. From his first appointment, Josh realized how well organized the program was. He met with trainer Neil Matthews, who took the time to ask him what his ideal service dog looked like for him. Neil informed him that he believed they already had the perfect match in training at the facility. He met Stanley for the first time not long after that appointment and after a few more weeks of his individual training at Certified Canine, Josh and Stanley had a lesson together and went home where they have been a team ever since.
Josh said that once he welcomed Stanley into his life, he has experienced a profound transformation. For the last 6 1/2 years Stanley has consistently supported him in making meaningful changes that have helped him become the person he aspires to be. Prior to being partnered with Stanley, Josh coped with his mental health changes by avoiding them and living in isolation. It had become clear to him that overcoming the difficulties associated with Post Traumatic Stress would not be possible on his own. Stanley's constant companionship has been pivotal in helping Josh rebuild his self-confidence, regain independence and rekindle his enthusiasm for exploring new opportunities.
When asked what he would tell another Veteran considering or just starting the Service Dog Program, Josh said he would strongly encourage participation, especially for those seeking to improve their mental health. He appreciated that the program involves minimal paperwork and an interview with the program director and trainers in order to get started. He states that soon thereafter, you embark on a journey toward a significantly improved life after military service.
Josh graduated with Stanley from the program in August of 2019 and recently accepted a volunteer role as a committee member with Victory For Vets in order to help pay forward to other Veterans what the organization has done for him.
You will undoubtedly have the opportunity to meet Josh and his happy go lucky and always smiling partner, Stanley, at Victory For Vets events throughout the year!

When asked to share what some of his challenges and difficulties were prior to being partnered with Ellie in April of 2024, AJ said he faced daily challenges with anxiety and stress resulting from Post Traumatic Stress from a grenade attack in Baghdad, Iraq in 2003 where he also suffered his first Traumatic Brain Injury. Twelve years later, a car accident left him with a 2nd TBI and unable to work any longer. He said simple tasks often felt overwhelming and he struggled to maintain independence and confidence. These last two years with Ellie by his side have changed things for the better.
AJ shared that his experience going through the Victory For Vets Veteran Service Dog Program was transformative. The staff was supportive and knowledgeable and guided him every step of the way. The training sessions at Certified Canine Services were tailored to his needs and he felt empowered as he learned to work with his new friend. AJ said that he loves that Veterans are paired with rescue dogs from Helping Hounds. Ellie was found in a box at 5 weeks old in Texas before being sent to Syracuse and he feels so blessed to have been matched with her. In AJ’s words “I rescued her and she rescued me”.
Since being matched with Ellie, his life has changed dramatically. AJ shared that he feels safer and more secure both at home and in public. He has been able to volunteer often with Victory for Vets and now holds a seat on the board so that he can be a part of helping more Veterans like himself. Ellie helps him manage his anxiety and provides companionship. His partnership with her makes each day brighter and he is able to participate in activities he previously avoided, including going to the VA.
When asked what he would tell another Veteran considering or just starting the Service Dog Program, AJ said “Trust the process and be patient. The bond you’ll develop with your service dog is worth every effort. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and remember that you are not alone. After graduation, there is a community waiting for you so you never feel alone anymore”.
AJ was asked if he had anything else he would like to share and it was his gratitude –
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this journey possible. The support, compassion, and dedication of everyone involved have truly changed my life. I will always cherish the gift of independence and friendship that my service dog has give me. A special thank you to the entire Victory For Vets team. Your commitment, encouragement, and belief in every Veteran makes a world of difference. I am forever grateful for your hard work and the positive impact you have made in my life having Ellie by my side now.”
AJ graduated with Ellie from the program in June of 2024 and has held a seat on the Victory For Vets Board since January of 2026. Over the last several years he has participated in many events held by or on behalf of the organization and is now an important part of planning, organizing and running events along with being a voice for the organization wherever he goes.
